Rev. Dr. Tim Li-Hui Tang
Tyndale (MDiv 2000)
During a mission trip to Asia in 1996, God called Tim to ministry, prompting him to attain his M.Div. in Youth and Family Ministry at Tyndale Seminary.
A second-generation Chinese Canadian whose parents came as international students from Hong Kong and Taiwan, he spent his first years serving as a pastoral intern at Markham Chinese Baptist Church, and later as Assistant Pastor at Redeemer Evangelical Free Church in 1999.
Tim joined the Tyndale University staff in 2016, when he was named Associate Director of the Tyndale Intercultural Ministries (TIM) Centre. Just two years later, he would go on to become the Centre’s first full-time Director.
His skill as a leader, teacher and facilitator, along with his expertise and personal experience in intercultural ministry positioned him to be a sought-after speaker, consultant and coach for leaders and organizations engaged in intercultural ministry. During his years at Tyndale, he developed, trained and mentored numerous organizations and churches, challenging and encouraging them to grow in intercultural competence.
Dr. Tang also served as a board director for Canadian Baptist Ministries, InterVarsity Canada, and Lausanne Canada, where he continued his passionate work creating space for intercultural understanding and appreciation while providing invaluable wisdom and guidance to the critical work of these organizations.
For those who knew Dr. Tang as a colleague, mentor, leader or friend, they remember a man deeply committed to his calling. He approached life and learning with grace and humour, and always held out a welcoming space to rest when one needed to think, re-think or simply be. It is the people his life touched who will carry on his work for generations to come.
Tim passed away suddenly on September 4, 2023. A special Distinguished Alumnus award was given, in memoriam, at the 2024 Homecoming event.
