Since his graduation, Michael pastored a number of Baptist churches in Toronto and St. Catharines, Ont., including as the Pastoral Team Leader of Walmer Road Baptist Church, a historic, multicultural/multi-ethnic congregation on the edge of the University of Toronto.

Besides his pastoral roles, he has also distinguished himself over the years through his contributions as a member/chair of several key BCOQ committees, his leadership in the BUILD program, and through his vision/action in the arenas of urban ministry.

Michael has also served well through his ministry with university students and in his chaplaincy services in prison and general/psychiatric hospitals, and as a member of the Tyndale Board of Governors.

Since November 2020, he has led the United Church of Canada as General Secretary.
