Hands

If you’re struggling to navigate life as a post-secondary student — and wondering why it seems so darn hard at times — you’re definitely not alone.

Cast all your anxiety on Him because he cares for you

— 1 Peter 5:7

On top of all the new life experiences at university, the milestones on your academic calendar can be overwhelming. From course introductions to assignments, mid-terms and final exams, we know there’s a lot to deal with.

It’s why you need to make your own mental health a priority, and why you need to know the faith community at Tyndale — one that cares deeply for every student’s well-being — has got your back.

Talking about mental health is no longer quite the taboo it once was. But for many, there’s still a certain reluctance to share experiences or seek help.

Mental health: The big picture

Mental health is actually one of the biggest concerns for college and university students and their families all across Canada.

  • The number of students with identified mental health disabilities such as anxiety and depression has more than doubled over the past five years, according to the Council of Ontario Universities.
  • In the wider community, the number of people suffering from depression, substance abuse, anxiety, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia and other mental illnesses is on the rise, with one in five Canadians experiencing some sort of mental illness or addiction problem.
  • Young people aged 15-24 are most at risk.

The good news is that with the right treatment and support, most people will recover. And no one should suffer alone or in silence.

If you’re feeling uncertain about your own mental health, the right professionals in the right space at the right time can help you manage, no matter what level of support you need.

The help you need, when you need it

As a registered Tyndale student, you’re entitled to confidential counselling sessions with a qualified professional.

  • Individual: These one-on-one sessions are designed to help you achieve your goals.
  • Couple: These sessions are open to any two people — dating, engaged or married couples, roommates, friends, co-workers, etc. — as long as one party is a registered Tyndale student.
  • Family: These sessions are geared toward parents, children, siblings, grandparents, etc., with the registered Tyndale student normally present.

10 free sessions for full-time students

Full-time students receive up to 10 free counselling sessions between September and August. Additional sessions are $10 each.

Part-time students pay a small fee ($20-30) for each 50-minute session.
