Course Overview

The Reading, Part 1 (Focus on Foundational Literacy Skills) Additional Qualifications course enables candidates to deepen their professional practice through a focus on curriculum knowledge, pedagogical strategies, and the learning environment. The course explores current theories, research, and instructional practices for teaching readers and developing a comprehensive literacy program that meets the needs of all students. It provides candidates with opportunities to enhance their practices, skills, and knowledge to teach foundational literacy skills (e.g., phonemic awareness, phonological awareness, concepts of print, alphabet knowledge, etc.) for beginning readers and older, striving readers. Recommendations from Ontario’s OHRC Right to Read Inquiry Report will be addressed, as will current issues related to literacy instruction (e.g., equity in assessment, supporting multilingual learners, explicit and systematic approaches to instruction, etc.). Current Ontario curriculum and policy documents will be reviewed.
