Teaches the building blocks of standard musical notation for the reading and writing of music. Students will study scale modes, chords, rhythm, key signatures, time signatures, transposition and common musical terms, drawing primarily from the standard repertoire of classical music. Serves the Tyndale University community as a course meant to further develop the skills of talented musicians who will serve in Chapel services and at various campus events. The band is a campus-wide ensemble, meeting regularly for rehearsals with performances and ministry opportunities throughout the semester. Band members will play for Chapels on rotation as well as other campus-wide and external engagements, as invited. Students must audition for this course near the beginning of the semester

The Tyndale Community Choir (TCC) serves as Tyndale’s primary vocal ensemble. TCC is both a campus-wide and community-based ensemble connecting Tyndale University’s students, staff and faculty with multi-generational singers throughout the GTA. The choir meets regularly for rehearsals throughout the semester with a variety of ministry and performances opportunities both on campus and at external events throughout the city. This choral course will serve the Tyndale University community as well as the community at large as a course meant to further develop the skills of talented singers who will represent Tyndale University and act as a ministry team in the GTA. Singers must audition for this course near the beginning of the semester

Provides individual weekly lessons in drum/ percussion-playing and techniques. The content will vary between students based on their individual goals and needs. Students will review the rudiments of drum/percussion-playing with a focus on tone production, repertoire, improvisation, notation, rhythm, and overall musicality. Students must undergo an assessment at the beginning of the semester

Provides individual weekly lessons in bass guitar-playing and techniques. The content will vary between students based on their individual goals and needs. Students will review the rudiments of bass guitar-playing, with a focus on tone production, repertoire, improvisation, notation, rhythm, and overall musicality. Students must undergo an assessment at the beginning of the semester

Provides individual weekly lessons in guitar- playing and techniques. The content will vary between students based on their individual goals and needs. Students will review the rudiments of guitar-playing, with a focus on tablature reading, open and barre chords and strumming and picking patterns. Lessons will include a private performance as the midterm exam and an individual performance for the studio as the final exam. Learned repertoire includes traditional roots music (folk music) as well as popular styles and sacred music. Students must undergo an assessment at the beginning of the semester

Designed to give students experience in creating music in a small jazz ensemble setting. Learning the fundamentals of arranging and improvisation, students will learn the role of their particular instrument in a small ensemble and how it functions within the group context. Students will have the opportunity to play as a combo for various Tyndale-sponsored events and work with practicing professional jazz artists in masterclasses and guest performances. Weekly piano lessons, 30 minutes in length. The lessons will be private, with an occasional master class open to all piano students, held at a mutually convenient time. Students will study repertoire for the piano of different time periods, and learn some progressive technical skills. Designed to give students experience in creating music in a small chamber music setting, with exposure to a variety of chamber orchestra repertoire. Learning how to function in relationship with one another, each orchestra member will learn how their instrument family complements another in order to function well as a whole. The orchestra will play for various Tyndale-sponsored events and play alongside the Tyndale Community Choir for large campus and community events. Explores many of the ways that music engages us. Students are encouraged to develop awareness of musical textures, sonority, rhythm, melody, harmony and how these textures invite the listener into the world of the musical work. Students will study various forms of vocal and instrumental music from both within and apart from the European tradition and explore some of the ways they portray the passions and the drama of the human story. Concert attendance, outside of class time, with and accompanying evaluation will also be a requirement of the course. Exclusion: MUSC 102

Students will be introduced to three connected disciplines in music – Performance, Composition and Worship Leadership. As a 5-week intensive, students will study the skills of performance in Guitar, Piano or Vocal music while learning the concepts and techniques of song-writing and the effective skills of Worship Leadership. Prerequisite: MUSC 101 or permission from instructor

Offers an introduction to the music of various cultures throughout the world. The course will provide an overview of the music of the Americas, Africa, Europe, Asia, Indonesia and the Pacific within the context of transnationalism and globalization. Course content will include the study of musical religious practices throughout various world cultures.

Teaches advanced forms of music theory. Students will study the tenets of harmony and counterpoint, analyzing chordal structure and devices found in various musical passages. Prerequisite: MUSC 101

Designed to be a complementary course to a student’s weekly applied voice lessons. Provides students with a constructive and supportive environment where students will learn the discipline of singing for an audience of their peers while receiving guidance and performance critique from the instructor. Students will be strengthened in their performance skills and will grow in confidence in this specialized performance environment. Prerequisite: 2 credit hours of Applied Music: Voice

Examines the fundamentals of speech and effective singing through the teaching of proper pronunciation of song text in multiple languages: English, German, Italian and French. Students will learn to apply these practices through class performances as well as oral and written examinations. Prerequisite: 2 credit hours of Applied Music: Voice

Students will learn to master guitar techniques while workshopping course material in a group setting, playing pieces that sharpen their technique and performance skills. Introduces the principles and art of solid conducting technique. Examining the relationship between gesture and sound, students will explore various skills employed by the choral and instrumental ensemble conductor including baton technique, score reading, gesturing and non-verbal communication.
