Examines the relationship between writing and the visual arts by focusing on themes in North American art. Critical essays, manifestos, artist statements, biographies, fiction, poetry, and other creative forms of writing may be examined in their artistic, social, political and intellectual contexts. Themes may include the following: identity, technology, performance art, artistic controversies, Pop Art and materialism, politics of landscape, art and national identity.
