Student Financial Resources Specialist (Full-Time)

Position Purpose

The Specialist, Student Financial Resources increases enrollment at Tyndale University through the strategic use of financial aid. The Specialist advises and counsels prospective students and families regarding financial aid, loans and alternative means of educational financing. This position is responsible for awarding institutionally-funded scholarships, bursaries and awards, the administration of provincial and federal financial aid programs (i.e., Ontario Student Assistance Program and US Student Loans), data analysis and budget control.

Primary Responsibilities

Financial Aid Counselling

  • Meet with prospective students and families to discuss financial aid options.
  • Make presentations to prospective students and families about financing their education at campus visit events.
  • Assist students and families in planning and managing their educational costs and exploring other financing options.
  • Assist prospective students and families with the OSAP application process.
  • Assist students with OSAP appeals and special cases.
  • Assist students with other financial aid appeals (related to the awarding of bursaries and scholarships).
  • Assist students with the United States loan and grant program applications.

Administration

  • Administer and maintain all Tyndale University financial aid programs (scholarships, bursaries, etc.) using financial aid software and other programs.
  • Oversee the administration of OSAP and other government financing programs (including US student loans) and monitor to ensure compliance, implementation of policy changes, process program code applications and seeks approvals.
  • Chair and liaise with the Financial Aid Committee(s) and other contacts to award financial aid according to institutional policies and/or the strategy set by the Vice President.
  • Communicate regularly with current and prospective students and relevant departments regarding the financial aid process and important deadlines through emails, website and other communication methods.
  • Work closely with the Student Financial Services Department, the Business Office and the
  • External Relations Office to implement applicable financial aid packages.
  • Review and recommend updates to financial aid application forms and assist in their revision.

Reporting & Analysis

  • Track the financial aid budget and lead its annual preparation.
  • Coordinate and prepare reports for auditing (i.e., OSAP, scholarships, bursaries, etc.).
  • Create and maintain regular reports to track the distribution of financial aid.
  • Analyze Tyndale’s financial aid distribution and assist in implementing – and developing - the financial aid strategy.
  • Research other financing options for students as required.
  • Provide feedback and recommendations for improving financial aid processes.

Position Qualifications

Education

  • Undergraduate degree, preferably in Business Administration, Finance or Public Relations

Experience

  • 2–3 years’ experience in a financial aid/finance role (preferred)
  • Previous knowledge of financial aid or database software packages (preferred)
  • An in-depth knowledge of Ontario Student Assistance Program and other government aid programs (preferred)

  • Strong interpersonal/relationship-building skills
  • Very good communication (oral and written) skills
  • Strong attention to detail with an aptitude for working with numbers
  • A high commitment to customer service
  • Strong analytical, critical thinking and problem-solving skills
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to prioritize tasks, meet deadlines, take initiative and work in a fast-paced environment
  • Strong computer skills with demonstrated experience MS Office applications - spreadsheets, word processing, database, etc.
  • Multi-tasking abilities and ability to process high volumes of work with accuracy
  • Demonstrated basic accounting skills, preferred

Physical and Mental Demands

  • Standard office environment and equipment
  • Ability to work with interruptions while ensuring attention to detail and accuracy
  • Physical effort may include lifting boxes of promotional materials and student files
  • Overtime and occasional evening hours and weekend shifts may be required
  • Moderate stress may result from dealing with challenging people; calm demeanour is required

Salary Range

$46,000 to $49,000
